UMDLOTI
I know the owner of these Airbnbs.
UHMLANGA
Umdloti, Umhlanga and Durban North are all a 20 –30 minute drive away from the venue and have lots of accommodation, especially Umhlanga. We would recommend Umhlanga for before or after the wedding as there is lots to do around this area. If you would like recommendations please let us know.
Get up early, Durban is best enjoyed in the mornings. You will see it bustling before work on the promenades with people out running, walking, surfing and going for coffee.
Go for a walk, run, or bike ride on Durban promenade. You can hire bikes at different points along the way:
Home - Bike and Bean (which has delicious coffee and yummy bacon and egg rolls)
There are some nice coffee shops along the promenade. Surf Riders does a good breakfast and has delicious food for lunch.
If you are looking to swim, we suggest swimming near uShaka Marine World or on Marine beach, where the sea is calmer. Make sure to swim in the designated swimming areas and swim at low tide. For the braver at heart you can hire SUP boards at the expression shop linked above. We suggest only strong swimmers do this.
At the top of the promenade by the road there are stalls with curios. If going to these stalls make sure to keep your belongings close and you may need to haggle. You will need cash at the stalls.
A few kilometres drive by car is the harbour. There are some nice restaurants along the way such as 9th Avenue Waterside. This was a strong contender for where we wanted to have the wedding reception. Head here for DELICIOUS food and a charming view of Durban harbour. You are looking at about £35-40 for a 3 course meal that would cost well over £100 in the UK. For the wine lovers they also have some wonderful South African wine and decent cocktails too!
Maha Café is also a great spot to visit in this area.
Not far from the beachfront is the Moses Mabida Stadium. For the adventurous you can walk the 500 steps to the top of the arch (or take the skycar) for some beautiful views
For the history lovers you can get the Ricksha bus in this area. Check Tripadvisor for more details
Get up early, grab a coffee and go for a walk on Umhlanga promenade.
Welcome to Tiki Tonga Coffee South Africa! (for the non-coffee drinkers, we recommend a Milo crush)
All the coffee shops along the way are good too.
If swimming, stick within the swimming area and swim at low tide. The sea can be rougher here than Durban Beachfront so take care.
Treat yourself to a cocktail at the Oyster box lighthouse bar, with views of the sea and Umhlanga's iconic lighthouse.
There are lots of restaurants in the Umhlanga village which has a lovely atmosphere. Head here for a bite to eat or just for a coffee/drink.

Lunch/Dinner:
Drinks:
Umdloti is a small beach town about a 10 minute drive from Umhlanga.
If you are staying around this area, we recommend getting up early for a walk along the beachfront, with a coffee in hand (as with all the beachfront areas). There is a great little spot called Doloras which is perched on a grass curb right on the beachfront.
There are a few other good coffee shops on the beachfront:
Get some drinks and have sundowners on the beach.
If swimming, again the sea is quite rough here, ensure to swim at low tide and in the designated swimming areas.
Restaurants:
Ballito is another Coastal town along the northcoast of KZN and is near where we will have the wedding reception.
Again we recommend a walk or run along the promenade in the morning/afternoon (why not stop for a sundowner on the beach?)
Stop for a breakfast at Kuta Kola for some amazing sea views while you sip on your morning coffee
Have some lunch/dinner on the beach
If swimming, again please make sure you stick to the swimming areas and low tide.
Ballito Lifestyle Centre is known as having some of the best restaurants in Durban. Start with a drink at Alchemy bar followed by dinner at Attikos (greek), Yurioki (Sushi / Asian) or 45 on Eat Street. There are no sea views, but a great atmosphere.
For the more active folk, we recommend a run through the sugar cane at Holla Trails. They also do a park run there on Saturday mornings
If wanting to head inland within KZN there are many stops for you along the way.
KLOOF/HILLCREST
Kloof is about a 30 minute drive from Durban. It has some lovely restaurants as well as some beautiful hikes/walks.
VALLEY OF A THOUSAND HILLS
Keep driving inland towards Valley of a Thousand hills. This is a good touristy thing to do in Durban, with beautiful views and an insight into the traditions of the Zulu people.
MIDLANDS MEANDER
The midlands is definitely a place to visit on your trip to KZN. There is something for everyone, beautiful views, amazing restaurants, hikes and trails, lovely arts and crafts shops and golf courses. This would also be a relaxing place to stay. Check out the website for ideas of activities and accommodation. We recommend the Blueberry Café to experience a loo with a view.
You can also go wine tasting in the midlands
GAME RESERVES
There are less game reserves in this region. Nambiti is a private reserve with a variety of lodges ranging in price. It is about 3.5 hour drive from Durban. About an hour drive from Durban is Tala game reserve. It is not a big 5 reserve, but is still a great option and worth a visit.
DRAKENSBERG
The Drakensberg is one of my (Alannah) favourite places in KZN. For those who love nature and outdoors (or golf lovers) this is a must! The Drakensberg is vast so we recommend sticking to the central Drakensberg as this is not too far away.
ACCOMODATION
Drakensberg Sun Resort | Drakensberg Hotel | Best Rates Direct
AfriCamps Champagne Valley, Drakensberg - AfriCamps Boutique Glamping South Africa
There are also lots of smaller chalets and BnB's around that are good and less costly. Please ask us any questions if you are unsure.

ST LUCIA
St Lucia is a small village about 2.5 hour drive from Durban. If you are wanting to see Hippos this is the place to go. You can choose to stay in the town and visit the game reserves from here, or simply stop on the way for a wonderful boat tour to see hippos and crocodiles. We highly recommend this.
GAME RESERVES
There are many game reserves in this area. In the government reserves you can drive yourself around or you can do a game drive for the day with a guide. If not going to the reserve with a South African, we recommend paying for a drive. In the government reserves, there is different accommodation that ranges in price from self-catering to slightly fancier – all are a good experience. South Africans often go for the self-catering options as if you really want to be in the 'bush' then you do not need to go fancy. In the private game reserves you will not be able to drive yourself. These also range in price from more affordable to luxury. We recommend checking on sites such as booking.com as you can find specials and deals compared to the reserves website.
Hluhluwe Game Reserve - KwaZulu-Natal Nature Reserves (This is a government reserve, you will find all the accomodation for the reserve on this site)
Mkhuze Game Reserve - South African Nature Reserve (This is a government reserve, you will find all the accomodation for the reserve on this site)
Makhasa Private Game Lodge - The Bush is Calling - Bush Break

Tembe Elephant Park (Slightly further away, but worth the trip)
Ghost Mountain Inn, Hotel, Mkuze, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa*
*These places offer boat tours. You can also book boat tours through Tiger Lodge and Ghost Mountain Inn without staying there.
These restaurants are listed above but if you are looking for seafood or steak we reccomend:

BUNNY CHOW
Durban is famous for the Bunny Chow. Which is basically curry in half a loaf of bread. Some recommended places:
