CAPE TOWN
Cape Town | South Africa (@cityofcapetown) • Instagram photos and videos
Unfortunately the Cape Town list will not be as vast as the Durban itinerary as Alannah is a Durban gal, but hopefully some of these tips shall help you with any planning for the mother city.
We recommend using Airbnb and Booking.com to book your places. Ideally choose accommodation that has off-street parking.
If you are looking to stay in the city bowl area - these are some areas to look at:
City Centre
Vredehoek
Gardens
Tamboerskloof
Waterfront
Greenpoint
Seapoint
CAPE TOWN CITY BOWL AND SURROUNDS
TABLE MOUNTAIN
Table mountain is one of the world's 7 wonders of Nature. It really is magnificent and is the focal point of the whole city. If you're lost, just keep driving towards the mountain and you'll make your way back. Given that Cape Town city is situated at the bottom of this mountain, it can mean the weather in Cape Town can be unpredictable. One side of the mountain could be hot and sunny, but on the other side it could be freezing with gale force winds (Cape Town can be VERY windy).
You can take the cable car up to the top of the mountain, this is a great experience and we definitely recommend it. However, the cable car is weather dependent so you will need to check in the morning.
You can book tickets here: Our African Wonder | Table Mountain
You can also hike up the mountain. It's about a 2/2.5 hour hike. It is a proper hike so no flip flops and jeans for this one. We only recommend this for the fit and strong. It's best to research your hiking route before going. There are lots of sites and blogs for this.
LION'S HEAD
For a slightly less arduous hike (except for the top), but equally beautiful views, Lion's head is a great option. If time, do both!
HIKES AND MORE HIKES
The cape is great for hiking and trails. Besides the above these are some recommended hikes:
Kloof corner
Kasteelpoort
Ladies Loop
Theresa Trail
Signal Hill: A great spot for a view and a picnic
Silvermine Nature Reserve: Silvermine – Table Mountain National Park – SANParks You will need to pay cash to enter the reserve.
RED BUS TOURS
I (Alannah) did one of these tours when I was at university in Cape Town and I felt like a tourist. I loved it. It's a hop on, hop off bus so it will take you to many of the touristy sites. You can stay on the whole time if you like, or use it for the day.
MARKETS
V & A WATERFRONT
Visit Cape Town's oldest working harbour
You can also head to the Timeout Market at the V & A. Just outside the food market is a great spot to see seals in the Cape Town harbour. Next door is the Watershed, a collection of 150 stores of local clothes, jewellery and home goods.
KIRSTENBOSCH GARDENS
Kirstenbosch gardens are magnificent and definitely worth a visit
WINE FARMS
STELLENBOSCH AND FRANSCHOEK
You can visit the wine farms for the day or choose to stay overnight in one of these towns (both towns are around an hour to get to from Cape Town). Franschoek is a lovely little town to stay in and you can walk around the high street in the morning to look at the local shops and dine at the restaurants.
There are so many wine farms in this area and you can do a few in a day as they are not very expensive. All are really great, but I would avoid Pigcaso. For the non-wine drinkers, the wine farms are also beautiful locations to have some lunch.
We recommend having a designated driver if you are visiting a few wine farms, or use the wine tram, we loved this!
You can also use a service like Goodfellas who will meet you where you parked your car and drive your car home for you.
There are so many wine farms to choose from, but my favourites are:
Welcome to Babylonstoren | Babylonstoren You can spend the whole day here, doing a wine tasting, exploring the gardens and having some lunch
Delaire Graff Estate | Wine, Dine, Stay, Spa & Art in Stellenbosch
CONSTANTIA
Constantia also has some lovely wine farms that are closer to the city centre (about 30 minutes away)
PLACES TO VISIT NEAR CAPE TOWN
KALK BAY
Visit the Brass Bell for some fish and chips
HOUT BAY
Another great place for some fish chips. They also have a market running from Friday to Sunday
SIMON'S TOWN
This is where the penguins live on Boulder's beach
CAPE POINT
Cape Town is a peninsula so you can access the above towns if you drive your way around the peninsula stopping at Cape Point. This is one of the most beautiful drives.
TOWNS A LITTLE FURTHER AWAY
HERMANUS
2 hours from Cape Town
KNYSNA
6 hours from Cape Town
PLETTENBERG BAY
6 hours from Cape Town
BEACHES
Cape Town has some gorgeous beaches, but beware the water is faaareeezing!
CAMPS BAY

Drive a little further on and visit the beautiful 12 Apostles hotel for a drink or high tea
LLANDUDNO
This is one of my favourite beaches
CLIFTON BEACHES
Great for a picnic or sundowner
MUIZENBERG
The beach you go to if you want to surf
Cape Town is known for having many amazing restaurants and drink spots, so you will not be short on options. Some recommendations are:
The Nines | Rooftop Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge | Kove Collection (london prices)
Kloof Street House (on the more expensive side)
Three Wise Monkey's You cannot book at the Three Wise Monkeys, so it is recommended to get there on the earlier side to get a table. If you cannot get a table, take a walk to Mojo Market which has a variety of food stalls and bars.
Mojo Market | Lifestyle & Food Market in Sea Point, Cape Town
Pizza Connection (You are not going for great views, but great pizza)
The heritage market Constantia Uitsig has a range of restaurants to choose from:
Have some breakfast at Four & Twenty Constantia Uitsig – Four & Twenty
Stop for some lunch at SushiBox | sushi | Cape Town, South Africa (This is a chain with locations around Cape Town)
End off with an ice-cream from Handmade Artisanal Ice Cream in Cape Town | Order or Collect from Kristen's Kick Ass Ice Cream
